Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

EMDR is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma, distressing memories, and negative experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements—to activate the brain’s natural healing process, allowing individuals to reprocess traumatic memories in a way that reduces their emotional intensity.

How Does EMDR Work?

When distressing experiences are not fully processed, they can become “stuck", leading to symptoms like anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional distress. EMDR helps the brain reorganize and integrate these memories so they no longer cause disruption.

The EMDR process follows an eight-phase protocol that includes:

Gathering history and establishing a treatment plan. Teaching grounding and coping strategies to ensure emotional stability.  Identifying the event that will be targeted.  Desensitization using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to process memories.  Reinforcing adaptive processing.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy

EMDR is highly effective for trauma recovery, anxiety, and PTSD, providing:

✅ Reduced emotional distress related to past experiences

✅ Increased resilience and emotional regulation

✅ Long-lasting relief without needing to relive trauma in detail

A Tailored Approach to Healing

EMDR is one of many evidence-based tools Leigh Polin integrates into therapy, depending on each client’s needs and therapeutic goals. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, Leigh carefully assesses when and how EMDR can be most effective for a client’s healing journey. Whether used as a primary treatment or in combination with other modalities, EMDR is a powerful resource for those seeking lasting emotional relief.
